Description Course Description:As clinicians, teachers, aides, and parents, we all seek success in the classroom that ensures a more inclusive environment: one that fosters students’ emerging AAC skills, supports growth, and provides opportunities for inclusive interactions with a variety of people. Through lecture, video examples, and demonstrations using Tobii Dynavox high-tech AAC communication software, participants will explore a variety of ways to progress student communication, and social and academic goals. Assessment tools, communication partner techniques, implementation strategies, and resources will be introduced to support inclusion and successful use of AAC in the classroom. Participants will leave with new ideas, strategies and resources to use the next day in their classrooms!
Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to: (1) Define augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and describe how it can be used to address student communication, social, and academic goals. (2) Name and describe two broad types of vocabulary needed for classroom participation. (3) List two or more communication partner strategies to support successful participation in the classroom.
