AAC Assessment: Let's Get Started!

Description

Participants will learn to use best practice strategies to complete AAC assessments and begin to implement AAC treatment strategies for children and adults.  Participants will create therapy plans including implementation strategies and goals in all area of communicative competence.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

• Identify components of a medically based AAC assessment and how to document these components in an AAC funding request
• Identify 4 current implementation strategies considered best practices
• Set operational, linguistic, social and strategic goals for a hypothetical client
• Customize the settings on an AAC device to meet a hypothetical client's needs

This course will be offered for 0.5 ASHA CEUs (Introductory level, Professional Area).

Erica Mbangamoh
Erica earned his Master's degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Nebraska in 2005, and also holds an Honours degree in Augmentative and Alternative Communication from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Her initial work experience included providing AAC assessment and intervention for all ages; she also co-developed an AAC camp focused on increasing the socialization of young adults who use AAC. She has presented at ASHA, MSHA, ISHA and has written articles for ASHA SIG 12 newsletter and Closing the Gap Magazine. Erica has been with Tobii Dynavox for over 7 years, first in southern Minnesota, and most recently in the Chicagoland area.
