Workshop will review ideas and provide strategies to answer the following questions:
- Why does my client or student need a Speech Generating Device (SGD)?
- What features are needed to match their abilities and compensate for their areas of need?
- What AAC solutions/SGDs meet these requirements?
- How will we support and implement the SGD in daily activities?
You are invited to come and explore best practice strategies to complete AAC assessments and begin to implement AAC treatment strategies. Using lecture and case studies participants will learn about communication and access for individuals with complex needs. You will make your way through 3 interactive lab stations and Do guided hands-on activities. Participants will create therapy plans including implementation strategies and goals in all area of communicative competence.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Identify components of a medically based AAC assessment and how to document these components in an AAC funding request
- Review case studies for individuals with complex needs to determine potential solutions and customize the settings on an AAC device to meet a hypothetical individual's needs
- Identify 4 current implementation strategies considered best practices
- Set operational, linguistic, social and strategic goals for a hypothetical client
CEUs: Certificates and Verification of Attendance will be available. Verification is used to document Certification Maintenance Hours.
Because of the unique characteristics of our product(s), this presentation will focus exclusively on Tobii Dynavox products and will not include information on other similar communication products.

As an Assistive Technology Specialist Dannel's passion is assisting with all things related to AAC including assessment, the funding process, implementation, and training for those with complex communication needs. Dannel is dedicated to evidence-based practice and has presented on the topic of AAC nationally and internationally.
