Implementing Augmentative & Alternative Communication for Emergent Communicators. IATP.Springfield.IL

Course Description:This implementation-based workshop will focus on the emergent communicator and how we can best provide supports and strategies that help realize their communication potential.  Participants will review the stages of pre-intentional and intentional communication as well as low and high tech AAC communication supports with the goal of moving our emergent communicators toward symbolic communication.
 
Learning Objectives: Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • List 3 characteristics of an emergent communicator
  • Identify 2 assessment tools for assessing emergent communication skills
  • Identify 2 high-tech AAC solutions can be implemented with the emergent communicator population. 
Presenter: Lindsey Frohn, M.S., CCC-SLPhas worked in a rehabilitation hospital for over 6 years as a pediatric speech-language pathologist.  While working with a wide variety of diagnoses and disorders, she developed a passion for AAC to increase her patients’ abilities to communicate successfully. She is a member of the Tobii Dynavox Learning Services Team.

Program Completion Requirements: Participants are expected to be present for the entire program.  Individuals who are not present for the full program will not be recommended for ASHA CEUs.  No partial credit will be provided.

Lindsey Frohn
Lindsey Frohn is a speech-language pathologist experienced in a rehabilitation setting working with a wide variety of diagnoses and disorders including TBI, stroke, Down syndrome, and autism. Lindsey developed a passion for AAC early in her career to increase her patients’ abilities to communicate successfully. She is a member of the Tobii Dynavox Learning Team where she develops and conducts trainings, creates implementation resources, and presents at conferences about AAC topics.
