Implementing Emergent Literacy Instruction with Reading Avenue

Description

All students must have access to a comprehensive literacy program, but how does that look for an emergent reader or readers in a mixed ability classroom? In this course, participants will learn best practices in emergent literacy instruction and how to implement these strategies through Reading Avenue. Reading Avenue is a curriculum designed to teach emergent readers through shared and independent reading, independent writing, phonemic awareness, and comprehension instruction. Participants will also learn how to use the embedded lesson plans to get started delivering instruction immediately and use Boardmaker to extend learning.

Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

·        Identify five components of a comprehensive emergent literacy instruction.

·        Describe four key strategies for teaching emergent readers.

·        Discuss how Reading Avenue addresses four key strategies for teaching emergent readers.

·        Identify a template using Boardmaker that could be used to extend learning.
