IMPORTANT UPDATE: AAC and Literacy (Norman, OK)

Description

IMPORTANT UPDATE: At Tobii Dynavox, we feel a responsibility to be advocates for the health and safety of our communities and customers. Given the rapidly evolving situation related to the COVID-19 outbreak, and out of an abundance of caution and respect, we have made the decision to no longer hold this session onsite at the J.D. McCarty Center in Norman.

However, if you are interested in attending a possible virtual training for Certification Maintenance Hours, please contact Nuala South. She will let you know as soon as a decision is made to either hold this training virtually for Certification Maintenance Hours or to cancel. If held virtually, this training will no longer offer ASHA CEUs.

There is increasing evidence and understanding that all students can learn to read and write. Research has proven that communication, language, and literacy skills develop in concert with one another, and that time spent in instruction in any one of these areas builds awareness and skill in the other. However, when it comes to individuals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) it is often thought that they need to develop a certain level of skill in communication with their AAC system before they can benefit from literacy instruction. This workshop will outline why that statement is false, and review steps to getting started in providing literacy instruction for your AAC user.

Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

·        Describe the literacy and language connection

·        Discuss how core words support powerful communication

·        Describe the role symbols play in literacy

·        List two emergent literacy strategies that support individuals who use AAC
