Strategies for Success (Orlando, FL)

Description

Trying to infuse communication and modeling opportunities into all subject areas can be an overwhelming task for any educator. During Megan Stewart and Jennifer Zeveney's presentation simple, yet effective lessons and activities that we have developed and used with students with autism and related disabilities from PreK to 5th grade will be shared. These activities could easily be used with students with other various developmental and/or physical disabilities as well. Lessons and activities will cover the following subjects and domains: language arts, math, science, social studies, art, music, functional routines, social skills, and life/recreational skills, with a focus on increasing communication and modeling opportunities throughout the day. Incorporating a variety of Augmentative and Alternative Communication methods, from low to high tech, within the lessons will be demonstrated with an emphasis on aided language stimulation. Increasing communication and modeling opportunities across subject areas increased lesson fluidity, classroom structure, and the effectiveness of teacher’s instructional delivery.
