Description “Our view is that competence should be presumed, with the burden on the teachers and others around the person to find ways of helping the person communicate” (Rubin et al, 2001). As clinicians, teachers, aides, and parents, we all seek the measure of success in the classroom that ensures a more inclusive environment; one that fosters these students’ emerging AAC skills, supports growth and provides opportunities for inclusive interactions with a variety of people. This workshop is designed to walk you through incorporating building blocks for success using AAC in the classroom to support communication, participation and positive behavior. Throughout the day, we will gather information specific to your AAC user. By the end of the day, you will have created one lesson/teaching plan supporting the use of AAC during an academic activity. You will leave this session with specific strategies, plans, and resources to use when you return to your classroom, and new ideas for teaching others to better support the use of AAC!
